Finding Background Information
Listed here are resources that can help you determine a topic and then begin searching for general information related to the disease or condition selected. Also, noting the medical terminology being used in the article will be helpful when you are searching for a research article.
- MedlinePlusThis comprehensive website is created by the National Library of Medicine to provide links to authoritive information on a wide range of medical conditions, as well as definitions and current news. Browsing for a topic is easily done in this resource.
Note: MedlinePlus is a different resource than Medline. - Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health, 2013As with the Encyclopedia of Medicine, this e-resource covers conditions and common diseases, as well as body systems and functions. It will also includes topics of interest to radiological and respiratory therapy. Arranged alphabetically by volume, it is searchable.
6 volumes. Click on the Table of Contents, then select a volume. The entries are alphabetically arranged. Or use the Book Index to look up a topic. - Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, 2011Conditions and common diseases, as well as body systems and functions, are arranged alphabetically in this e-resource, and it is searchable. These encyclopedia articles may contain a description of the condition, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments.
- Wiley Encyclopedia of Biomedical Engineering, 2006This source provides some background on disease and medical conditions, as well as discussing areas of application for biomedical engineering. For example, the article on Cancer mentions skin substitutes and bone defect treatment among other topics.

- Click on the Databases tab
- Click on the first letter of the article database name (M for Medline) in the grouping under "Databases by Name",
- Click on the article database name.
