Resources to help you with the theoretical background and research regarding Service-Learning. General SL resources, articles, and books will be found on the Home page. Additional tabs will include the same resource types, specific to the topic.
A case study model of assessment was developed at Portland State University (Oregon) to measure the impact of service-learning on four constituencies (student, faculty, community, institution). The case studies blend qualitative and quantitative measures to assess impact and provide feedback for continuous improvement. Insights from the design process and preliminary results are reported.
Service learning practitioners must devote more resources to systematic, scientific assessment of service learning outcomes across students, faculty, institutions, and communities. Provides recommendations for generating meaningful information about service learning, including: evaluating hypotheses derived from theory, using multiple-item measures of theoretical constructs, using designs that allow causal inferences, and making appropriate theoretical and practical generalizations from research.
