Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Subject Guide
Article Database for General Interest & News
These general purpose databases cover general magazines, newspapers, industry news... and some even cover technical content. Look in the descriptions for those that cover magazines like Discover, New Scientist, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Science, and Scientific American.
ABI/INFORM (1971-current)
Business and industry topics are covered extensively in this database which covers over 3,000 publications. Look here for articles in New Scientist.
* Academic Search Premier (selectively from 1975-current)
This index covers many magazines and journals, including technical journals. Look here for articles in Discover, New Scientist, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Science, and Scientific American.
Business Source Premier (selectively from 1965 - current)
Business and industry topics are covered in this extensive database covering business periodical articles, including full-text from over 2,300 titles. Look here for articles in Scientific American.
LexisNexis Academic
This full-text database covers news from magazines and newspapers from 1980 to present. This is a very good source of regional news--for example the Northwest or a specific state. Look here for articles in New Scientist and Popular Mechanics.
National Newspapers (early 1990s-current)
Use this index for articles in newspapers like the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.
ProQuest Central (date varies)
Find articles from magazines, newspapers and journals, including technical journals. Articles from a variety of regional newspapers are included. Look here for articles in Discover, New Scientist, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, and Science.
Articles Databases for Energy/ Environment
These article databases and newswires cover sources that emphasize aspects of energy or environment.
E&E Publishing - Environment and Energy Newswire
Headline news articles are published here in categories like Greenwire, Climatewire and E&E Daily, with special reports, topical issues and video content also available. If you're looking for current news on energy topic, try this database out. Browsing and searching options are available.
Environment Complete
Offers deep coverage in applicable areas of agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy, renewable energy sources, natural resources, marine & freshwater science, geography, pollution & waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning, and more.
GreenFILE (date varies)
This collection of scholarly, governmental and general-interest titles covers multidisciplinary environmental issues such as recycling, global change, green buildings, and water quality management.
Pollution Abstracts, (1981-current).
Covers over 1,000 American and foreign periodicals, documents and reports on topics related to pollution. The print version, Pollution Abstracts (1970, 1974-1980), is available at TD172 .P65.
Article Databases for Technical Topics
Periodical Articles and Conference Papers
These article databases focus on technical articles written for the research community. New developments and current research are often first presented as journal articles and/or conference papers. If your topic is fairly broad, and you're looking for an overview of the research, one strategy is to look for review articles. Look for the Review tag for descriptions on limiting search results to "reviews" in those databases that allow this limit.
Applied Science and Technology Index, (1983-current w/abstracts since 1994),
Best source for finding product reviews and news related (engineering) information. Indexes articles in 620 periodicals. The print version, Applied Science and Technology Index, is available from 1958-2000 at TA 1 .I5, with an earlier title, Industrial Arts Index, available 1913-1957, with some missing issues. Reviews: not recommended-- there is a Document Type limit for Review Articles, but the number of articles with this tag is very small.
Compendex, INSPEC and GEOBASE (1898-current)
Compendex covers periodical articles and conference papers for all engineering disciplines, from 1969-current. Over 5000 serials are included, this is a good source for current and past research.
INSPEC primarily covers periodical articles and conference papers (1898-current) but also includes some books, dissertations and reports. Over 4000 serials covering topics in electrical engineering, physics, manufacturing, computers and control are included.
GEOBASE (1980-current) covers journal articles, conference papers, reports and books in geography, geology and ecology. Over 2000 journals are covered.
Compendex, INSPEC, and GEOBASE are searched jointly on the Engineering Village Platform. To search only one of the databases, on the advanced search page, remove the check in the box to the left of the database you do not wish to search by clicking on the box. The check mark will be removed and that database will not be searched.
Reviews: Using the QuickSearch interface, there are options for limiting your search below the search text boxes. First, uncheck the box on the left of Geobase. From the "Treatment Types" limit box, choose "General Review". If you then uncheck INSPEC (leaving only Compendex checked), an additional treatment type of "literature review" is available. If you uncheck Compendex so that only INSPEC is checked, INSPEC has an additional treatment type of "Bibliography" that might prove useful.
ScienceDirect (1997-current)
Contains full-text articles from over 1700 journals published by Elsevier. Although the content is multi-disciplinary, the primary focus is science, engineering and medicine. Table of contents information is available for publication years before 1997.
Web of Science (1900-current)
This index includes article information from approximately 8,500 journals in sciences, engineering, social sciences, arts and humanities. The main purpose of this index is the cited reference search, which searches for the articles that have cited a particular author’s work, or a specific article. Reviews: On one of the lines of paired boxes, choose "Document Type" from the drop-down menu on the right. This brings up selections in the box to the left; select "Review".
