Cost of Living Index
(This 1873 Gibson & Co. poster proclaims "Cheap Groceries" at their establishment. (From the Library of Congress Digital Collections, LC-USZ62-8245)
The ACCRA Cost of Living Index is an approximate, but reliable, measure of the cost of living between different urban areas. In other words, this index presents "the relative price levels for consumer goods and services in participating areas." The average for all places is 100, and each index is a percentage of the average for all places. (Ex: The same cart of groceries for 2007-08 was 101.3 in Twin Falls and 152.9 in Honolulu, HI.)
