MLA Examples

These examples are based on the7th Edition of the MLA Handbok for Writers of Research Papers. To locate copies of this title please look at the MINI REF sections on every floor of the library.

 

IN TEXT:

  • Provide the author's last name and page number after the quote
    • (Smith, 178)
    • (Hacker, 92)
  • If the author's name is in the previous sentence, just add the page number
    • Like Smith said, "All good things must come to an end," (178).
    • Dr. Hacker insists that all good things must come to an end (92).

List of Works Cited

  • Add the medium of source (Print. Web. CD. DVD. CD-ROM.)
  • Italicize the title, not underline
  • If it's a web search include:
    • the title of the database or web search used (Google Book Search, JSTOR, EBSCO - always italicized)
    • the medium of publication consulted (Web)
    • date of access (day, month, and year)
  • Do not include the URL unless the reader cannot locate the article otherwise

WEB BOOK or E-BOOK:

You only need to cite with the URL if it cannot be found by using the title of the database or Web site and the citation information. If so, consult the MLA Style Manual Third Edition follow sections 6.7.1 

PRINT ARTICLE IN A JOURNAL:

Include the title of the database in italics, the medium of publication consulted (Web), and the data of access (day, month and year).

Include: the name of the author, compiler, translator; the title of the work; the title of the overall web site (italicized); version or edition used; publisher or sponsor of the site and if none available use N.p.; date of publication (if available, but if there is none put n.d.); medium of publication (Web); date of access.
