DOI

Direct Object Identifier

Since the internet is prone to breaks in links, the DOI is provided as a way locate a scholarly journal, even if the link has been broken when information gets moved or is changed.

Example

Article with DOI assigned:

Stultz, J. (2006). Integrating exposure therapy and analytic therapy in trauma treatment. American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, 76, 482–488.
doi:10.1037/0002-9432.76.4.482

DOI Tools

When using electronic resources, the links that you use to access or retrieve the information can stop working at any time. Websites change addresses, move around into other places, or sometimes disappear altogether.

The Direct Object Identifier provides a link that can access and locate the whereabouts of any scholarly article on the web.You can find these in many databases. In the image below you can see the DOI at the bottom of the screenshot.

If you are wondering what the DOI is for certain articles you are working on, use the Cross Ref web site:

http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/

Use the APA guide to Electronic Resources to find out if you need a DOI or a website with the date accessed:
