Welcome to the CE 595 page! This page covers library resources that help you find research articles for hydrology, atmospheric sciences, geotechnical enginering and climate change. Besides the content on this page, notice the tabs at the top of this page will take you to additional content. Links to additional key Library resources are listed in the box below this.
Additional Article Databases
To access additional article databases, or to access these through the Library's main article databases page:
These article databases cover articles in journals in broad subject areas that will cover one or more of the topics hydrology, atmospheric sciences, geotechnical engineering and climate change. Some of these databases will contain additional material, like papers in conferences or reports.
Finding Review Articles
Review articles are helpful because someone else summarizes the research in a topical area (up to a particular date), essentially doing some research for you, and providing some context for that research. Some indexes have filters for finding Reviews; other sources have reviews as an integral part of the publication.
Compendex and INSPEC (1898-current)
Reviews: Using the QuickSearch interface, there are options for limiting your search below the search text boxes. First, uncheck the box on the left of GEOBASE (GEOBASE does not have this filter). From the "Treatment Types" limit box, choose "General Review". If you then uncheck INSPEC (leaving only Compendex checked), an additional treatment type of "literature review" is available. If you uncheck Compendex so that only INSPEC is checked, INSPEC has an additional treatment type of "Bibliography" that might prove useful.
Web of Science (1900-current)
Reviews: You have two options -- 1) at the beginning of your search, or 2) as a post search filter. 1) At the beginning: on one of the lines of paired boxes, choose "Document Type" from the drop-down menu on the right. This brings up selections in the box to the left; select "Review". 2) After your search, on the results page, look at the left of the page under "Refine Results" for Document Types-- look for "Reviews"; if there, click the box to the left and click the Refine button; if not there, cllick on the "more options/ values" at the bottom of the Document Types listings to check all listed Document Types.
Reviews: GeoRef has a subject heading of "review" and another of "critical review". To search with these terms, go to the Advanced Search, type review in the text box and in the drop down box associated with that text box, select Descriptors, DE= ; on the second line, enter terms from the topic of interest in the text box(es).
These publications concentrate on reviews of specific topical areas in a range of disciplines. These are indexed in some of the article databases that have been mentioned, but you can also search this source directly.
Proquest Dissertations and Theses
Dissertations are descriptions of research in a very specific area that a graduate student produces as part of the requirements when obtaining a PhD. These are typically book length documents and include literature reviews. Look for a dissertation on a topic relevant to your subject; the literature review may be a separate chapter, or be embedded in selected chapters. Dissertations have lengthy reference lists, so scan the reference list for possible titles of interest as well. Proquest Dissertations and Theses will have the full-text of dissertations published after 1997.
